Music is the best, most important thing in my life, and I absolutely love teaching it! My primary goal for teaching is to impart my love of music to anyone who wants to learn. Whether you or your child turn this skill into a lucrative profession or simply a lifelong hobby that brings joy to them and those around them, I will always provide the best possible instruction at the top of my abilities. In my experience, the best results occur when the student rises to the challenge of learning. In order to achieve this, lessons are expected to be prepared each week and students are encouraged to contact me with any questions they may have between lessons. Should parents have any questions concerning their child’s work, calls, emails and texts are always welcome.
General neatness is expected. Students are requested to come to lessons with hands washed and nails trimmed. Please no muddy sport shoes or wet swim suits. Gum chewing is not permitted at lessons.
Parents are invited and encouraged to sit in on the lesson.
OTHER EXPENSES
Music The cost of sheet music is not included in tuition fees. Sheet music and lesson books must be purchased and brought to each lesson.
Events Events are chosen for each student on an individual basis each year. As an active member of ADMTA and Piano Guild, I regularly encourage students to prepare for and perform at these functions. They take place throughout the school year, beginning in October and lasting until May. When a student prepares for and performs for an event they gain real world knowledge about performance, learn about perseverance and how to achieve a long-term goal. Additionally, the more a student performs for others, the more comfortable they become in a public setting and with themselves by setting a goal and achieving it. Entry fees for events usually range between $15-$40.
PRACTICE EXPECTATIONS
Learning to play the piano is an ongoing endeavor, which requires dedication and discipline on the part of the student. Piano study is a partnership between student, parent, and teacher. The lesson is a very small part of the week. It is the responsibility of the student and the parent to see that the remainder of the week is productive.
Work with your child to establish a routine. Students are encouraged to keep a practice record, and to work toward musical goals rather than simply counting minutes. It is consistent, efficient, daily practice that leads to the satisfaction and joy of steady progress towards solid musicianship, although the quality of the time spent practicing is most important.
I suggest the following guidelines for daily practice: 5-8 years old: 15-20 minutes 9-11 years old: 25-30 minutes 12-15 years old: 35-40 minutes 16 and older: 45-60 minutes.
I highly recommend the student bring a small notebook in which I can write their weekly assignments and they can track their practice habits.
MISSED LESSONS
Please be aware that your lesson time is reserved exclusively for you. It is very difficult to create a weekly schedule based on student requests that accommodates all students schedules Please honor your weekly piano lesson time with the same attention given to other activities.
If you have a known conflict like a band concert or religious function coming up and need to switch your scheduled lesson please email, text or call in your request at least 24 hours in advance, and I will do my best to accommodate your needs. If you have an unexpected conflict arise such as illness or car trouble the day of your child’s lesson, please text or call ASAP to let me know you child will not be at the lesson. It is recommended that we switch to a virtual lesson that day if possible. A makeup lesson is not guaranteed if the lesson is missed. The students name will be placed on a list and when there is a vacancy in the weekly schedule students from the list are called to take the vacant lesson time. The sooner notification is received the more time there is to call another student in. Once teaching hours have started I cannot take time from that students lesson to make calls and the time will be wasted, please give as much notice as possible.
There will be no makeup lesson or credit for students who do not show up for an in-person lesson or answer when called for their virtual lesson without notifying the teacher.
DISMISSAL
Students may be dismissed for any of the following reasons.
*Repeated failure to attend lessons
*Repeated failure to prepare lessons
